Silver Cord Program English Valleys High School
Purpose
The purpose of the English Valleys Silver Cord Program is to promote an understanding of civic responsibility and community pride. In addition, the program offers a venue to recognize students who go above and beyond in investing in their community.
Requirements
Students who complete 100 hours of community service by March 31 of their graduation year will wear a silver cord at graduation. Students must have completed a minimum of 20 hours each year to qualify. A student may begin as a sophomore, but will need to complete 125 hours total by March 31 of his or her senior year.
Students participating in the Silver Cord Program will submit a log to the school counselor each semester. Hours for an academic year will be from June 1 to May 31 for Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors, and from June 1 to March 31 for Seniors.
Hours may be submitted at any time during the school year, and more than one log may be submitted per school year.
Hours that May Apply
Category 1: Arranged Privately Unlimited Hours
Any nonpaid hours not otherwise required in service of a nonprofit institution may qualify. This would include church, school, agency, charitable or community organization. It could also include service or assistance offered to individuals in need.
Category 2: Arranged by Advisory Groups Limit 4 hours per year
Up to 4 hours of service work done as part of Advisory activities may be applied each year. All hours much be preapproved
by the student’s advisor.
Category 3: School Clubs and Organizations Limit 4 hours per year
Up to 4 hours of service work done as a part of membership in school clubs or organizations may be applied each year. All hours must be preapproved by the student’s advisor.
Category 4: Outside Clubs and Organizations Limit 4 hours per year
Up to 4 hours of service work done as part of membership in an outside club or organization may be applied each year. All hours must be preapproved by the student’s advisor.
Hours that Do Not Apply
Court ordered community service hours or those served as part of school discipline may not be applied.
